Kincardine and Deeside Arts Forum are holding a Fiddle Competition
in November 2011 with the first round being held in
September leading up to the final on the 16th November.
The purpose of this competition is to help raise the profile of young
musical talent and highlight the role of Kincardine and Deeside
Arts Forum in supporting all forms of artistic activity among
groups and individuals within the Aberdeenshire South area.

It is an unusual competition in that it is open to both classical and
traditional players.

KDAF gave grant assistance to Ian Greig of Banchory to enable
him to attend the Newark School of Violin Making. Ian is
very generously gifting one of his hand made violins as the
prize for this competition.
The violin was made in 2008 and is an interpretation of Sacconi Cessols, Antonio Stradivari violin of 1716 and has an insurance value of between £6000 and £7000.
To be eligible to enter the competition, the applicant must have a connection with the Kincardine and Deeside area and must be under 20 years of age on 31st December 2011. The winner will be an individual who shows their passion for the violin and for music in general and will give three performances on the violin at events across the Shire.

For more information, please contact;

Closing date for entries – 30th May 2011

KDAF: previous art grant awards

leave a comment »

Deeside Arts Forum has awarded several grants to young musicians, enabling them to attend music courses and summer schools.
Other personal development grants have included an award to enable an artist to attend a course on making hand-made paper to enhance
her art and to enable her to run classes on this subject in her local community.
Project support grants have been awarded to the “Yellow’s on the Broom” Arts Festival, “Sideline Multi Arts”, based at Woodend Barn
running workshops culminating in an annual performance and “Fèis Spè Ltd”, a ceilidh music group of sixteen young musicians, four of
whom live locally.
The Forum has also supported North East Open Studios, the newly-formed Woodend Music Society, The Burn’s Quoir, The Banchory
Birl, Grampian Young-Arts, The Finzean Project “Portrait Of Our Time” and The Tarland Welfare Trust.

The Stonehaven Recorder Consort

leave a comment »

The Stonehaven Recorder Consort has had a very busy year. Most of
our players live in or around Stonehaven, so we are fortunate we can
get together quickly if we need extra rehearsals, or indeed celebrate
birthdays or and family occasions (a bonus we hadn’t thought about
when we got together!).
This year’s weather has curtailed some workshops-we had hoped to
get together with the Brechin group, but road conditions did not permit.
For Christmas 2010, (between snow storms!) , we accepted the kind
invitations of Edenholme and Clashfarquhar Old Folks Homes to play
carols. Afterwards, we enjoyed a chat and a cup of tea with the residents at Edenholme, and the following week met the Day-care ladies at Clashfarquhar, who took a great interest in our instruments, and joined in with alacrity on the percussion instrument we are collecting.
Playing in a group, whatever the weather, is a joyous activity and really
concentrates the mind on the pleasure of playing together, and it is a
even greater fun to share it with others. We are very fortunate to have
an enthusiastic leader (Anne Bellarby) who constantly challenges our
progress and performance, and has a wonderful knack of persuading
us to try working on instruments other than our own.
We always feel brighter after a rehearsal, and feel we have really grown
in confidence and musicality over the last year. We play a wide range of music –Scottish, English, Baroque, Renaissance, Jazz and Popular –
but if we need a lift at the end of a busy workshop we play Handel as
he always gives us a boost!

The Forum is funded entirely by Aberdeenshire Council and is run by volunteers who meet regularly in both Banchory and Stonehaven.
